Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

Heart is in my hands by, Shimelle Laine (CC BY 2.0)

I was at  my nanny and nana's house yesterday for Valentines day. Throughout my whole life my nanny has always said how cold my hands are.. I'd go to her small little rocking chair in the corner, to greet her. I'd hold her hand and give it a nice squeeze. And she'd always reply with how cold my hands are.  It's something I expect every time we meet. But this week in particular, she said something different. I grabbed her hands for a warm hello and she replied as usual in her voice, sweet as honey, "my dear, your hands are cold." And I'd laugh a little as always. But then she recited a small poem. She told me "Cold Hands, Warm Heart," and stated with a little chuckle "you must be in love." This got me thinking..... I thought about who I might be in love with, but my mind was not in the right place. I couldn't think of a single boy I "loved." The truth is, I don't love any boys. So why does that poem feel so true? My cold hands must mean something.... and then it hit me. I am in love! I'm in love with my life, my surroundings. I have everything I need. I am so in love with my brother, sister, mother,  father. I'm overwhelmed with love, joy, happiness, and freedom. And so I replied to my, sweet, frail, great-grandmother, "That's because I'm in love with you." And I meant it with all my heart.
